Beautiful Engineering Design

Posted on Jan 21 , 2011 in Mavis Says

The Eiffel Tower looms over the City of Lights like a child’s oversized erector set. If I had been a better higher math student, perhaps I may have become an engineer (to the chagrin of some of my former colleagues). However, I’m still nerdy enough to have taken photos of the rivets. Isn’t it fascinating?

Heights scare me and I have a childhood fear of being stuck at the top of a Ferris Wheel. However, another Parisian ‘superstructure’ (everything is typically low in Paris), the La Grande Roue cannot be missed! It’s in the Place de Concorde. That’s the site of the beheadings (yep, that’s right!) of Marie Antionette and Louis XVI. But no need to be afraid as the guillotines these days as they have been disassembled and put away.

Notre Dame cannot be overlooked either, because it is so amazing. Can you imagine designing and building this before computers or construction cranes?

Ouvrir La Porte!

Posted on Jan 13 , 2011 in Mavis Says

The plane landed, and the chanting began. “Ouvrir la porte! Ouvrir la porte! Ouvrir la porte (open the door)!” charmingly uttered, as is only possible, by a French 5-year old.

With that in mind, here are some photos of beautiful doors that I took on a recent trip to France. I was continually walking around with my eyes averted. It’s a wonder I didn’t get run over in the Parisian traffic.  My favorite was the red door, but the blue color was a refreshing change. The last three pictures are from Versailles. Oh la la! The decadence!
